Southern Constellations (SOCO) is an annual, curated, fellowship program that explores experimental practices across a network of Southern artists.
The 6 selected SOCO Fellows are supported through a month-long residency, provided room and board in the historic museum, travel support, and $1000 artist honorariums to create new site-specific projects within Elsewhere. While working independently at Elsewhere, Fellows are featured in public events, expanded conversations, and exhibitions around the region.
Elsewhere seeks artists with compelling, critical, socially engaged work and a commitment to their city or region who demonstrate conceptual and aesthetic experimentation with practice. This fellowship residency and ongoing participation in a regional arts network would be a transformative experience for all ideal candidates. Elsewhere seeks a diverse cohort in terms of geography, race, identity, medium, and capacity.
Eligible 2019 fellow candidates are nominated by arts professionals and through open applications.
The application period for the 2019 SOCO Fellowship is April – July 10th, 2018.
The SOCO Residency will take place June 2019.
Fellows are expected to sign a contract and participate in the full-month residency.
Southern Constellations is funded in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Fear No Joy, Zeelie Brown (Brooklyn, NY / Pollard, AL)
Southern Constellations Fellow. July 2017. Performance documentation. Cello, bleach on denim, ribbons, roses.
To be eligible for a Southern Constellation Fellowship, artists must be based or raised in the Southern United States* and able to attend the full month-long residency in June 2019 (exact dates TBA).
Artists eligible for these Fellowships (room, board, travel, $1000 honorarium) should keep in mind that this curated residency only has 6 spaces and is very competitive. The selection committee seeks residents who demonstrate commitment of applied skills, design intention, site-specific interest, and community participation.
Applications are reviewed through a robust, multistage process that involves past SOCO fellows, state and local arts professionals, community members, and Elsewhere directors. Each one is reviewed individually to ensure applicants get adequate attention and accurate representation; a final review of top candidates curates the 6 fellows for the residency session.
Fellowships are primarily based on nominations from a group of over +30 artists, curators, collectors, and university educators to expand a regional network of experimental practitioners, and foster an exciting cohort of exceptional artists.
In an effort to reach those we don’t know and create space for those operating outside these artistic networks, self-nominated applications are also considered through our residency application process.
