Rosa No. 7 Yellow Independence, Rontherin Ratliff (New Orleans, LA)
Southern Constellations Fellowship. July 2017. Fabric, lath boards, wood, wooden toys, toy army figures.

Living inside a “wall-to-wall environment of visual stimuli” at Elsewhere, Ratliff was surprised to find that his response to the space was triggered by his sense of smell. Upon entering the space, the artist was reminded of having breakfast as a child with his grandmother, Rosa, 27 years ago in New Orleans.

With this interactive sculpture, Ratliff explores the ideas of scent, memories, and vibrations where audiences are invited to enter the space and, with three deep breaths, leave a memory while creating a new one.
