Cake Action

Cake Action

An exuberantly painted dinner bell system constructed out of an old compressed gas cylinder calls to all three floors. The bells have been paired with a sculptural suite of cakes created for members of the Elsewhere community from collection items to create an atmosphere of enthusiasm in the museum.
Synartesis + Elsewhere's Roof Top Survival Kit

Synartesis + Elsewhere’s Roof Top Survival Kit

Synartesis Jazz Leeb’s circular ribbon-rope sculptures cap the openings to stove-pipes on all three floors of the museum. Streams of ribbon-rope extend from the mouths of the sculptures and playfully articulate a structuring condition in each room as they loop in and out of fissures in the interior façade of the building. While the rope cord...
DanceLab

DanceLab

DanceLab is a youth-led movement-research investigation bringing together students at Dudley High School and artist Athena Kokoronis to create a site-specific dance for downtown Greensboro. A series of interactive workshops led by Athena and dance teacher Angela Robinson will explore Elsewhere’s living museum and Greensboro as sites for storytelling and experimental dance. The project culminated with...
Duets

Duets

Clint Sleeper’s Duets project is a sound art inspired means for facilitating collaboration in Elsewhere. Extending notions of collaboration, instruments created by previous artists-in-residence Kieran Morris (Receiver, 2012), Daniel Fishkin (Lady’s Harp , 2011), and the Invisible Collective (Singer Songwriter, 2010) were updated, revised or re-imagined. These instruments were then paired with a series of...
Ambivert: Section (1,2,3)

Ambivert: Section (1,2,3)

Ambivert: Section (1,2,3) created by sleeper is a series of three extravagant wearable sculptures that lead a kind of double life. On display in the accessories room at museum, they stand alone as visually compelling art objects encasing the forms of mannequins as architectural dwellings for the body. They also come to life as vehicles...

Regiment

Regiment

Untitled (Ribbon Room Immersion)

Untitled (Ribbon Room Immersion)

During her residency Casey Middaugh was drawn to explore the Ribbon Room on the 2nd floor of the museum as an immersive environment with the potential to transform one’s psychology and behavior. She spent two weeks among the dense, musty brambles of colored ribbon that fill the room, making sense of the psychological effects of...
Blue Yonder

Blue Yonder

Delicate textured paper cuts that refer to snake skin, tree bark and the crystalline structures of the inorganic world. Soft looming tree-form. Gem-like glowing pendants. The permeation of blue light that refracts across walls lined with mirrors. These are the means by which Ashley Yeo transforms the Glass Forest installation on the 2nd floor of...
Untitled (Legend)

Untitled (Legend)

Untitled (Legend), is a video diptych about the continuous movement of objects in the museum through processes of art production and curation. It highlights the mostly invisible labor that goes in to every day acts of displacement and draws attention to the narrative potential and limitations offered by close attention to traces of human activity...
